🍇 . . #meravigliasemplice #yarnaddict #cozyvibes #plantdye #themagicinnature #woollens #naturaldye #teamautunno #zerowastelifestyle #botanicaldyes #gowildlyandslow#naturalcolours  #plants_are_magic #knitlover #cozyandwarm  #purple💜 #plantsaremagic#knittinginstagram #autumnpalette #cozyautumn #tinturanaturale #phytolaccaamericana  #dyepot #phytolacca #forestcolour #mylocaldyeplants #fallpalette#woollen #gomitoli #pianteselvatiche

Just in time! I cleaned up a rather neglected garden bed just before our first winter weather here in Sperryville. I love medicinal weeds. Here I have a Poke Root, Phytolacca americana- Appalachian style herbal medicine that comes with a warning. Yes, it’s true that misuse of this plant can result in poisoning, but all parts are medicinal, and when harvested correctly the young roots and leaves are edible. I was very excited to come upon this root so perfectly intact. I will be tincturing it and also preparing it into a salve later today. When using Poke tincture, we take drops. It’s a micro-dosing plant medicine. Quite literally 1-3 or 5 drops (not dropperfuls!) is the range of dosing where I begin. This is powerful herbal medicine that should not be approached lightly. The tincture will be used to stimulate the lymphatic and immune systems, with an on and off dosing approach. The salve will be for swollen lymph glands, sore throats, and breast lumps. I was even recently reading an article that discussed the use of Poke for the stimulation of an under-active thyroid. Fascinating. Spiritually this plant is all about breakthroughs. Cleansing old traumas from the system, while bringing latent issues to the surface for processing. It is important to note that often with powerful immune stimulating herbs emotional and spiritual/psychological issues arise- so be prepared to support processing with additional remedies and modalities. Astrologically, we’re talking about Pluto, Saturn, and Chiron. Indications would be blocked emotional energy, anger and frustration. For people who wallow in the depths of their emotions. Especially for the sad, depressed, and mournful. Poke has a strong opening and enhancing effect on kundalini, affecting the seven chakras along the spine and associated “etheric” fluid, hence the use topically for chakra balancing in my massage therapy and reiki practice. 🌿🌱💗🌀#poke #pokeroot #plantmedicine #herbalist #medicinalweeds #lymedisease #immunehealth #lymphaticsystem #mastisis #energyclearing #phytolaccaamericana #herbalism #caracadabra #thetattooedherbalist #sperryville #plantmedicine #healing #anticancer

Pokeweed on wool! What a task! Turns out pokeweed is not colorfast and has a tough time sticking to cellulose based fabric. However, it sticks really well and produces a variety of pink hues on wool! Guess who doesn’t knit, me! So my mother now owns many skeins of wool dyed with a very acidic bath of pokeweed. Fantastic fuchsia and cranberry hues. . . . . #dyedinqueens #dyedwool #botanicaldyed #botanical #pokeweed #phytolacca #phytolaccaamericana #acidbath #berrydye #fuchsia #cranberry

American Pokeweed - Phytolacca Americana grows wild here along the Tuolumne River. It is poisonous, especially late in the season like now, when the stems turn red. Some people do eat the young chutes but it require many washings. The ripe berries can be used as a natural dye for fabrics. I think we’re going to give it a try! #phytolacca #phytolaccaamericana #instaplant #plantsofinstagram #plants #berries #gardenlife #garden #garden_styles #gardener

. #meravigliasemplice #burgundyred  #cozyvibes #plantdye #themagicinnature #woollens #naturaldye #tinturanaturale #aseasonalshift #botanicaldyes #gowildlyandslow#naturalcolours  #autumnday #coloriautunnali  #autumnpoetry #cozyandwarm  #phytolaccaamericana #plantsaremagic  #simplefallcolors  #autumnpalette #cozyautumn  #puralana  #coloriautunnali  #dyepot #plants_are_magic  #fallhasarrived #mylocaldyeplants #fallpalette  #phytolacca#marsalacolor

🖌️🔸🌿 Pokeweed ink is so gorgeous! With a little know how, you can adjust the shades of the final result. (There are tons of tutorials online.) The dark outline of this drawing did wind up fading out, but to a very unusual and not at all unwelcome color. I'm undecided on what I may want to add to it, but I'll share the final result soon. This is Phytolacca americana , a plant better known in the east for its dye properties and which is the eastern equivalent of woad, used to dye fabrics indigo. It’s a beauty but it made me think. Our culture for so long has been fast and throw away. Fast food, fast fashion. Buy, use, chuck out. And as this has become the norm and especially in the last 10 years, where normal folk have seen their salaries worth less and less, that throw away culture has become part of how we afford our lives. Spending large amounts on quality items just isn’t an option for so many people and I’m one of them! I might aspire to @toast but it’s more likely to be @marksandspencer!! I try so hard to make ethical choices, and in reality I so wish I’d learnt to sew at school, but for me like so many others there’s some serious issues around making those ethical choices that mean sometimes I can’t buy, or I have to buy the less than perfect option. And I know I’m not alone...... But then I thought. A mix of ‘meeting’ @christinelewisstudio on Gardeners World and then over on Twitter and here, and thinking, as always, about how community gardens really serve the community, and bam!! Surely community dye gardens, where people could come and learn about fabrics, dyeing, sewing, making.........Its really exactly the same as any other community garden, except rather than feasting as the end result, there’s dyeing, sewing, making!! Have I lost the plot?!? I don’t think so, but who knows? It’s got to be worth a try right?!? . . . #dyegarden #phytolacca #phytolaccaamericana #edenproject #ethnobotany #peopleandplants

Spent a bit of time this afternoon foraging pokeberries from the pokeweed I found earlier in the summer on one of my walks. I probably missed prime harvesting time by a week since many of the berries had dried out. But I don’t mind just having a tiny bit of pokeberry ink to play around with this first go around. . P o l k B e r r y 🥀. Polkweed is my backyard poison. Poison plants have long been associated with witches. Poison plants demand our respect and remind us to be mindful of their potency. Many plants can be allies in healing but also poisonous if used incorrectly. Village healers were considered witches when they had the knowledge and wisdom to work with this power...between life & death. The most famous family of poison plants are the solanaceae family, the folk song Wild, Wild Berry speaks of its deadly nightshade. “Wild, Wild Berry” Young man came from hunting faint and weary, “What does ail my love, my dearie?” “O Mother dear, let my bed be made, for I feel the grip of the woody nightshade.” Lie low sweet Randal. Now all you young men that do eat full well and they that sup right merry ‘Tis far better, I entreat, to have toads for your meat than to eat of the wild, wild berry. Now this young man he died fersoon by the light of the hunters’ moon ‘Twas not by bone, not yet by blade but the deathly grip of the woody nightshade, Lie low sweet Randal. His lord’s ship winch, they hanged her high, for she was the cause of her love to die and then her locks entwined a braid of the deathly leaves of the woody nightshade, Lie low sweet Randal. Now all you young men that do eat full well and they sup right merry ‘Tis far better, I entreat, to have toads for your meat, than to eat of the wild, wild berry. ☠️ #witch #poison #magic #phytolaccaamericana

American Pokeweed ~ Phytolacca Americana Right over the border of my yard there is a large stump from a sick tree my neighbors had to take down (awesome how they left the stump). Next to this stump a Pokeweed sprouted up! It is more in their yard than mine, but I'm excited about it. Considered an undesirable plant by many due to its toxicity (poisonous to humans and pets), Pokeweed berries are a great food source for many birds and small mammals. I also think it's pretty beautiful, with the bright red stems and berries which turn purply black when ripe. #americanpokeweed #pokeweed #phytolaccaamericana #nativeplants #panativeplants #wildgarden #leavethestumps #birdfood #ayardrestored
